The Visual and Functional Impact of Peyronie's Disease
What differentiates PD from other causes of incontinence is that it is often visible. It occurs when there is an excess build-up of plaque consisting of both collagen and calcium, causing the penis to bend and when erect it can bend as much as up to 180 degrees in extreme cases.
The penis can bend in any direction and severity of plaque may cause issues when urinating and also the trajectory when voiding. However, this issue is reported by a limited number of patients.
Surgical Options for Severe Peyronie's Disease
Men with severe PD curvature may undergo an operation to have an implant which is surgically inserted into the penis. This implant has a silicon reservoir, a manual pump and tubes that run from the bottom to the head of the penis. The manual pump is used to create the erection. If the penis is also shortened then full, straight erections can be achieved again. A number of patients with penile implants have reported that urination takes much longer with a decreased flow.
